Dropped $150 on a fancy creosote log, total waste of money
Bought one of those super expensive creosote removal logs for a flue that was getting pretty gnarly. It barely knocked any of it loose, I still had to go up and scrape it all by hand the next day. Anyone else find those things are basically just a scented candle?

Did you follow the directions exactly? Because I've used the expensive brand name ones twice now and they worked great. You have to let the stove run hot for at least 2 hours after the log burns down so the heat really loosens everything up. The first time I used one I had big flakes falling down into the firebox the next morning. Maybe your flue was just too caked on for any chemical to work, but for regular maintenance those logs are way better than climbing up on the roof in the cold.

Ha, I actually burned my eyebrows off a little bit trying to peek into the stove to see if it was working. Didn't get any big flakes or anything, just a lot of smoking and a new fear of opening the firebox too soon. Did yours make that weird crackling sound for a while after the log was gone?

Makes me think of that time I tried using a shop vac on my chimney and ended up with soot all over my living room carpet.
