Bottom-up sweeping vs top-down: a flue in Gary, Indiana changed my mind, but my old boss says I'm wrong
Three years ago I was on a job in Gary, Indiana and a pigeon shot out of the flue right into my face, and I've swept bottom-up ever since. My old boss of 14 years says that's backwards and top-down is the only way he'll ever do it because you can see the whole liner from up there. Last month I pulled 2 full buckets of creosote from a ranch house in Valparaiso using the bottom-up method and never once had to climb the roof. He argues I'm missing cracks up top, I argue he's missing the pile building at the smoke shelf until it's a real problem. I get why both sides swear by their way, but I want to hear from guys who've done this for 20 plus years on which method actually catches more blockages. Which one do you run, and have you ever had a call that made you switch?
