Appreciation post: my brush finally fits snug after 6 years of guessing sizes
For years I just eyeballed the flue and grabbed whatever brush was closest on the truck, which meant I was always sweeping twice and still leaving creosote on the corners. Back in March a guy named Dale at a supply shop in Akron showed me how to measure the flue at three spots and order a brush a half inch bigger than the smallest one. I finally did it last month on a rental property in Cuyahoga Falls and the difference was wild, one pass and the walls came clean, no scraping afterward at all. My sweep time on that house dropped from about 50 minutes to 32, and the landlord actually noticed the fireplace looked different. I know it sounds small but after 6 years of fighting undersized brushes it feels like a real step up. What do you all do for flues with a weird taper, do you size to the bottom or the middle?
