The prep cook who minced garlic with a coffee mug, I lost it

Caught my new guy smashing garlic cloves with a ceramic mug on the line during Friday dinner rush in Tulsa, and he said "it works fine," so I had him mince 3 pounds that way while I timed him, has anyone else dealt with creative tool misuse that somehow takes twice as long?
