That fancy mandoline I got for Christmas nearly cost me a fingertip

I bought a $45 mandoline last January after seeing it on a cooking show, and within two weeks I was bleeding over a potato in my own kitchen. The guard slipped on a wet carrot and I sliced my thumb pad pretty good, had to get 3 stitches at urgent care in Akron. Has anyone else ditched these things for a good old chef's knife after a close call, or am I just clumsy?
