Shoutout to the line cook who taught me to season pasta water like the ocean

I was working a dinner rush at this Italian spot in downtown Austin about 6 months ago, and a guy named Marco grabbed my wrist before I dumped a box of salt in the water. He said "taste it first, it should sting your tongue like a mouthful of sea," which felt dramatic but he was spot on. Does anyone else have a random tip from a coworker that just stuck with you for years?

Honestly? It's just salt water lol. Pasta water being "like the ocean" is basically standard cooking 101, not some life changing revelation from a wise line cook. Marco sounds like he was just being extra for the sake of being extra. But hey, if it made you feel good about your pasta, I guess that's cool.

Aw man, I feel this. It's totally just one of those things that gets blown up into some big secret when really it's just... basic salting.
