Just realized I blew almost $400 on a fancy mandoline slicer I never use

Back when I was at The Blue Heron in Portland, I got talked into buying a top of the line French model. It was supposed to save so much time on prep, but the setup and cleaning took longer than just using a good knife. It's been sitting in a cabinet for three years now. Anyone else have a kitchen gadget that seemed like a good idea but just collects dust?

I've noticed this pattern shows up everywhere, not just in kitchens. We buy into the idea that a fancy tool will fix a problem we don't really have. Then we end up with a drawer full of stuff that just reminds us how simple things already worked fine.

Read that same thing about mandolines in a cooking blog.

Wait, that blog said you could slice a whole onion in under 30 seconds, @william_carter... that just sounds like a recipe for disaster.
