TIL I was ordering gas station hot dogs wrong for years

I was at a Speedway in Cleveland last week getting my usual hot dog combo. I always ask for the chili and cheese on top, then walk it over to the condiment station to add ketchup and mustard myself. This older guy next to me says "you know they put the chili on the bun first, not the dog. Keeps the bread from getting soggy." I looked at my sad, wet bun and realized I had been doing it backwards for probably 15 years. Has anyone else had a basic food prep habit flipped on them like this?

Oh come on man, is putting chili on the bun first really that big of a deal? I mean, sure, the guy at Speedway probably meant well but we're talking about gas station hot dogs here, not some Michelin star meal. If you've been doing it your way for 15 years and it worked fine, why let some random dude make you second guess your whole system? A little soggy bread never killed anybody, and I'd bet most people can't even tell the difference once you pile on the ketchup and mustard anyway. Seems like one of those things people get weirdly serious about for no real reason. You do you, keep ordering your hot dogs however you want.

You know, I actually felt for the original poster when I read that. I've been getting hot dogs at the same gas station for about eight years now and I always put the chili on top of the bun first, same as him. Last month a new clerk told me I was doing it wrong and it really threw me off my whole lunch routine. It's not about being fancy, it's about what feels right after years of doing it the same way. Some people just don't get that even simple things like a gas station hot dog can have a little bit of personal history attached to them. I'm glad you told him to stick with what works for him, because honestly, that's just good advice for anything in life.
