That $9 footlong that gave me a $25 lesson in trusting gas station sushi
Stopped at a Shell station off I-35 near Austin last Tuesday around 2pm. Saw a refrigerated display with pre-made sushi rolls for $5.99 and grabbed two. Got home, ate one, and spent the next 18 hours praying to the porcelain gods. Never again, has anyone else been burned by suspect gas station seafood?

Wait was the display case actually cold or just kind of cool? I've noticed some gas stations keep those things sitting way too long and the temperature is barely holding. Like I'm wondering if you checked the pack date or if it was one of those where the rice was already getting hard on the edges lol. Cause that's usually a dead giveaway that it's been sitting there for days. Also were there like actual raw fish rolls or were they California rolls with the fake crab? Because honestly the cooked ones should be safer but I still wouldn't risk it.

Wait did you actually touch the glass to check? Cause some of those cases feel cold on the outside but the temp inside is all over the place if the door gets opened a lot. I've seen gas station fridges where the compressor kicks on and off so the back is freezing but the front row is basically room temp. That's the real danger zone right there. And yeah the rice getting hard on the edges is a dead giveaway, but sometimes it's the seaweed that gets chewy too. If the nori is already soft and wrinkly instead of crisp, that roll has been sitting there for way too long. So yeah was the glass actually cold or were you just going by how the air felt?

Oh man, it's like you just reminded me of that consumer report I saw about gas station sushi sitting at unsafe temperatures for hours! I read somewhere that those pre-made rolls are basically ticking time bombs if the cold chain gets broken even once during transport. Honestly you're braver than me for even trying it, I've always stuck to the prepackaged crackers at gas stations and called it a day.
