Am I the only one who blew $34 on a "gourmet" gas station hot dog in Amarillo and regretted it instantly
Stopped at a big travel center off I-40 outside Amarillo last spring and saw a sign for a foot long artisan hot dog for $11.99. Figured that was fair for a road meal and grabbed three for me and the kids. The bun was cold and stale, the chili tasted like it came straight from a can, and they charged $2 extra per topping. Two hours later my stomach was a mess and we had to pull over twice before Oklahoma. When I was a kid, my dad would hand us $5 at a truck stop and we would walk out with burgers, fries, and a drink with change left over. That same $34 today got me one lousy meal that I could not even finish. The hype on the sign with the fancy lettering got me, plain and simple. Has anyone found a gas station stop under ten bucks that actually fills you up and tastes decent, or am I stuck packing sandwiches from here on out?
