Wrote off canned sardines as cat food until a $3 tin in Astoria changed my mind
I used to walk past the sardine shelf at my grocery store in Astoria without a second look, figured that stuff was only for cats or people who lost a bet. Then my roommate dared me to make dinner with a $3 tin of the ones packed in olive oil, so I mashed them on toast with lemon and hot sauce, and it was honestly better than the $14 tuna melt down the street. That whole meal cost me about $4.50 and I've made it at least 8 times since. So now I'm wondering what other cheap stuff I've been unfairly judging, what's a food you swore off until you actually tried it?
The part about the "$14 tuna melt down the street" is what gets me, cause that gap between what you pay and what you actually get is where all the good cheap food is hiding. Sardines are kind of a perfect example since they sit right next to the fancy stuff but nobody touches em. So my real question is, was it the olive oil tin that flipped you, or do you think the plain ones in water would've done the same thing? Cause I feel like the oil is doing a lot of the heavy lifting there and the cheap water-packed ones might've kept you on team cat food. Also curious if you've tried the ones in mustard sauce yet, those are a whole different game.
