The moment I realized I was overspending on spices at the grocery store

I was making chili last month and needed cumin. Grabbed the store brand for $1.79. Got home and realized the little jar was like half the size of the McCormick one I usually buy. So I did the math and it came out to almost the same per ounce. Then I remembered my buddy who runs a kitchen told me to check the bulk bins at the co-op. Walked out with a bag of cumin for 47 cents. Blew my mind how long I just grabbed the pretty jar without thinking. Anyone else get tricked by the package size game?

Yeah I was totally the person who thought the fancy jars meant better quality. I used to buy McCormick everything because my mom always did and I never questioned it. Then I saw the price difference and figured the store brand must be garbage. But honestly reading your post made me actually check and yeah the store brand is basically the same stuff. I still buy the big jars at places like Costco or the bulk section when I'm being smart about it. The markup on those little glass bottles is insane once you notice it.

Does anyone else actually find the pre-ground stuff in bulk bins loses its flavor way faster than those sealed jars?
