That week I tried to live on only store brand pantry staples

Last month I decided to do a challenge where I only bought store brand stuff for a week. Day two I made pasta with store brand sauce and it was fine, just a little sweet. But by day four I had this awful mac and cheese that tasted like cardboard with orange dye. The canned beans though? Those were identical to name brand, no lie. Has anyone else found that some store brand items are way worse than others, like the gap is huge?

Hang on real quick, store brand canned beans are hit or miss too. I grabbed a can of generic black beans once and they were mush, like baby food consistency. The name brand ones held their shape way better. But your point about mac and cheese is spot on, the cheese powder in the cheap boxes is always this weird fake orange dust that doesn't even melt. The pasta itself is usually fine though, it's just the sauce or seasoning mix that lets you down.

@oscar_ellis you're right, the cheap cheese powder is basically just orange sadness in a box.
