Store brand pasta sauce beat the fancy jar in my five buck taste test

Last Tuesday I made spaghetti for dinner and had exactly $4.87 left in my wallet. Grabbed the generic tomato basil sauce for $1.29 instead of the $3.50 name brand jar, and honestly it was sweeter and thicker. I added a pinch of garlic powder and a splash of olive oil, and my roommate asked what restaurant I ordered from. Anyone else find store brand staples like sauce or canned tomatoes actually hit better once you doctor them up a bit?

The cheap sauce plus a spoon of sugar and dried oregano beat my fancy jar every single time, no contest.

Oh boy, tell me about it. I did the same thing last week but added a pinch of cinnamon by accident, thought I ruined it, and my kids demanded I make it that way from now on. @margaretm23, you're onto something with those cheap jars, they leave room for the real flavor to shine through.
