Trained for 14 weeks doing only long runs and my race time barely moved, added 2 speed days a week and dropped 4 minutes off my 10K
I ran the same 10K course in April and finished in 58 minutes. Then I did 14 weeks of just easy long runs, thinking more miles would fix everything, and ran it again in 57 minutes. Two weeks after that race I started doing one day of hill repeats and one day of 400m intervals each week. Same total weekly mileage, nothing else changed. Ran the course again last Saturday in 53 minutes. I keep telling myself the easy miles built the base for the speed work to actually stick, but maybe I just wasted 14 weeks. Can anyone who actually knows running explain if the base phase was necessary or if I could have skipped straight to intervals?
