My neighbor the mechanic told me I was wasting money on premium oil

I've been running synthetic in my 2008 Honda Civic for 5 years, spending around $45 every 3,000 miles. He showed me his 20 year old truck that's only ever had cheap conventional oil and the engine still purrs. Is paying extra for synthetic really worth it if you change it on time?

Huh, but did he pull the valve cover off to show you the sludge buildup?

That sludge is honestly a perfect metaphor for half the stuff I see people letting slide in their daily lives. You open up one little thing and find a whole mess that's been building for YEARS. It's like when you finally clean behind the fridge or under the couch cushions. Everything looks fine on the surface but the grime just keeps piling up until it's a concrete layer. We're all walking around with metaphorical sludge in our cars, our homes, and probably our brains too.
