My 75 year old neighbor changed how I think about lawn care

She told me she hasn't watered her grass in 15 years and it looks better than mine. Said I'm just feeding the roots shallow and making them lazy. Am I overthinking this whole watering schedule thing?

Honestly I heard something similar on a gardening podcast a while back. They said deep watering once a week is way better than light sprinkling every day because it forces the roots to grow down deep to find water. Your neighbor's totally right that frequent shallow watering makes the grass lazy and dependent on you. Plus the clay soil where I live holds water forever so I just let the rain do its thing unless it's super dry for weeks. Ngl my lawn actually looks greener now that I stopped babying it with the hose every morning.

And honestly @amy_murphy85 that podcast thing makes so much sense because I realized the same thing with my vegetable garden last summer lol. I was watering my tomatoes every single evening and they kept getting all these shallow roots that would dry out if I missed one day. Then my uncle who's like 80 told me to just soak them once a week and stop being such a helicopter plant parent. The grass thing is probably the exact same deal your neighbor's been doing it for 15 years so she's clearly onto something. I bet if you tried her method for a month you'd see a huge difference even if it feels wrong at first.
