My brother's cold gazpacho argument made me question my whole soup line

Last Sunday my brother Mike showed up with a bowl of gazpacho and just started eating it with a spoon. I told him soup needs heat, that's the whole point, and he laughed and said stew is just thick soup so where's the real line. Then he pointed at my cereal bowl and asked why milk and grain is fine cold but blended tomatoes and veggies isn't. It hit me that I've been drawing a line based on tradition not logic, and now I don't know where I actually stand. Has anyone else had a family member shake their soup beliefs in one conversation?

Sixty seven years on this planet and my own brother made me question whether chili counts as soup, so I feel your pain. But here's the thing, does temperature really matter, or is it all about what's in the bowl? My wife eats yogurt cold and calls it breakfast, but nobody argues with her about that. So why is a tomato puree any different just because we stuck a Spanish name on it? Maybe the real line isn't heat or thickness, but whether you can drink it from a mug without looking weird.
