I put cold brew in my chili for a potluck in Tulsa and now I have to admit hot soups can be cold if you're stubborn enough
Okay so here's the thing. For 2 years I was on the strict side of this community where cold soups are basically just sad smoothies you eat with a spoon. I would argue with my roommate Dana in Tulsa about it every single Sunday while we meal prepped. Then the church potluck happened 3 weeks ago and I had already committed to bringing chili, but I woke up late and my slow cooker was still cold at 10am. I panicked and dumped in a cup of cold brew coffee thinking it would speed things up and nobody would know. It did not speed things up. It got to the potluck still lukewarm and I served it over ice because I am not proud of who I become under pressure. People went back for seconds. Three people asked for the recipe. Now I am sitting here wondering where the line actually is, because my brain says soup is hot and cereal is a cold soup, but my tongue says the cold chili was better than the hot batch I made in February. Where do you all draw the line, is it temp or is it texture, because I feel like I just broke my own rule for a church crowd.
Picture the potluck table itself doing the work here. You served that cold chili over ice at a church gathering, which means people weren't judging it as chili at all, they were judging it as some kind of cold spicy gazpacho situation with beans, and once your brain files food under a different name the temp stops mattering. Nobody at that potluck expected hot chili, they expected whatever the heck was in that bowl, and it delivered. That is why the February batch lost even though it was technically correct. Hot chili has to live up to being hot chili. Cold chili just has to be cold and good. Textures matter more than temps anyway, which is why cereal works and why warm milk with soggy flakes is a crime. Your tongue is right and your rule was too strict.
