Worst Monday ever with a bad seam in a living room in Phoenix
I had a job last Monday in Phoenix where a seam just split right open after I laid the carpet. Happened about 10 minutes after I finished, and the homeowner walked in and saw it. Turns out the backing was defective on that roll, and I had to redo the whole room. Has anyone else dealt with a bad batch from a supplier that messed up your whole day?

Idk, maybe it's just me but Ive had plenty of times where I thought the backing was bad but it was really how I set my seam or stretched the carpet. You mentioned the seam split 10 minutes after you left. That sounds more like a stretch issue or maybe the power stretcher wasn't set right for Phoenix heat. If the backing was truly crumbling, yeah that's a different story, but sometimes suppliers get blamed for install mistakes to save face. Did you actually test the seam glue on a scrap piece before you laid it down?

Three weeks ago I got a bad roll from Builders FirstSource, that seam glue just wouldnt grab no matter what I did. Called the supplier and they tried to blame it on my install, but I sent them a video of the backing crumbling in my hands. They finally sent a replacement roll and gave me a $200 credit on my next order, but it still cost me a whole day of work. Always take photos and save a piece of the bad material before you pull anything up, it saves you the headache of arguing later. If you used a local shop, talk to the manager not the counter guy.

$200 credit sounds nice and all but that doesn't really cover a full day of lost work does it... especially if you had to rip out and redo the whole job around it @ross.felix. I've seen that backing crumbling thing before and it's wild that suppliers still try to blame the installer when the material literally falls apart in your hands. The video backup was smart though, that's the kind of proof they can't argue with.
