Old timer at a supply house in Tulsa told me to stop stretching from the doorway
He said he's been laying carpet 31 years and always starts his power stretcher from the far wall, then works back toward the door, said it saves him from chasing wrinkles on the last pass. I tried it on a 12x15 bedroom this morning and the seam laid down flat on the first stretch. Anyone else stretch back to front or am I the odd one now?
31 years in Tulsa and that old timer knows what he's talking about. I've been doing this 18 years and I stopped starting at the doorway about a decade ago. On a 12x15 room you might not notice the difference, but try it on a 20x30 living room with a seam down the middle and you'll see what he means. When you start at the door, you're pushing all your slack toward the far wall where you can barely reach, and that's where wrinkles hide. Far wall first means every bit of slack gets worked out toward the door where you've got room to maneuver. It's not some old trick, it's just physics.
