I finally figured out a better way to handle those tricky angled cuts in a stairwell

Last month in a big house in Tacoma, I had to carpet a stairwell with three weird turns. I started marking the carpet on the floor like always, but it kept coming up short. So I tried laying the piece on the actual stairs and marking it there, and it fit perfect the first time. Anyone else have a go-to trick for stairs that aren't straight?

Wait, you were marking it on the floor before? That's wild. I can't believe that ever worked on a straight run, let alone a turn. The angles get so messed up when the carpet isn't on the actual stair plane.

Tried marking on the floor once and it was a total mess. I ended up just laying the runner on the actual stairs and marking it there with chalk. It takes a bit longer but the fit is way better, especially on the turns.

Yeah, learned that the hard way too.
