Found an old trick for pattern matching that saved my back in Austin

Been doing this 15 years and never bothered with a chalk line on patterned carpet, but a retired installer in Austin showed me how a simple plumb bob and a straight edge can line up seams in under 10 minutes, so why did I waste all those months crawling around with a tape measure, has anyone else picked up a method that made you feel dumb for not knowing it sooner?

Ditch the plumb bob and grab a tape measure every time. That retired guy probably had 40 years of muscle memory, so it looks easy for him, but for the rest of us, a chalk line just adds a step where you can mess up the pattern direction. I've seen guys spend 15 minutes setting up the bob, only to realize the carpet has a repeating pattern every 18 inches and the straight edge was sitting on a seam that would show under bright lights. Tape measures are boring, sure, but they don't lie and they work the same on a Tuesday as they do on a Saturday. If the trick was that good, every crew in town would already be doing it, not just one retired guy in Austin.

Tape measures are fine, but they never helped me with a 12 foot seam on a busy pattern where the repeat is NOT obvious. I picked up a laser cross-line level from a guy in Nashville and it changed everything. You shoot the line, drop the pattern piece on it, and you can SEE the repeat line up before you ever stick the tack strip down. Saved me from ripping up a whole hallway once when the pattern was off by half an inch. Sometimes the old timer's trick is just the seed, you tweak it for your own hands. Don't knock it till you've tried it on a Tuesday with a hangover, that's when the real test happens.
