Changed my mind about kickers after one blew out on a staircase in Tulsa
I always said kickers were a waste and stapled carpet straight to the tack strip like my old boss in Tulsa taught me. Then a week ago I was finishing a stair runner on a flip house off 11th Street and the bottom step came loose two days later, customer called me back and I had to eat the trip. Pulled it apart and the strip had cracked right where the carpet wrapped over it, no kicker holding anything down. Now I keep one in the truck and use it on every step and every doorway, takes maybe 20 extra seconds. Anybody got a trick for keeping the kicker teeth from chewing up the pad on really tight landings?
Kickers are cheap, callbacks are not.
Try flipping the kicker over and using the smooth side as a backer on tight landings, saved my pad more than once.
