My uncle Bob told me to use drywall screws for decking and I spent 3 hours fixing it

Uncle Bob must've built his deck back when people thought screwing two boards together with anything was fine. Drywall screws are brittle as heck, they'll snap clean off the first time you put any real weight on them. You need outdoor-rated screws with some give, like coated deck screws that won't rust and can handle the wood expanding and shrinking. At least now you know exactly what not to use, and you got some practice with the drill. Next time, just nod and smile at Uncle Bob, then hit YouTube before you touch a tool.

Honestly can't believe Uncle Bob actually used drywall screws on a deck, that's terrifying.

Jeez, drywall screws on a deck? That's insane. Those things are made for hanging sheetrock, not holding up people and furniture. One good rain and they'll snap like twigs under the weight.
