My old boss in Chicago told me to always use a 3/4 inch spacer block for setting deck joists. Did it for years until a new guy showed me his 1 inch trick.

So you just put the spacer on top of the joist and set the next one on it? I was the same way, swore by the 3/4 inch block for ages. Then I saw a guy use a 1 inch and realized it gives you that tiny bit more room for your fasteners, which makes sense. @matthewkim is right, it's funny how we get stuck on small differences that feel huge. That quarter inch change actually made my life easier once I tried it.

Yeah that "tiny bit more room for fasteners" is exactly it! I switched to 1 inch spacers last year and it made nailing off the subfloor way less of a headache. You don't realize how much you're fighting for space until you have it.
