DAE notice how much smoother a hand plane cuts after you finally get the chip breaker set right?
Two months back I picked up a beat up No. 4 at a flea market in Portland for $22 and the shavings kept tearing out no matter how I adjusted the iron. Last Tuesday an old timer at the shop grabbed it, spent maybe 90 seconds with a file on the chip breaker, and the very next pass came off in one long curly ribbon. Same board, same blade, same sharpening job, the only thing that changed was the breaker sitting flush against the iron. I had been blaming the wood the whole time. Anyone got a good rule for how close is close enough on that gap?
I always figured the chip breaker was just there to add stiffness, but watching it turn a tearout nightmare into a glassy finish changed my mind hard. Paul Sellers says a hair under 1/16" for a smoother, tighter if you can get it and still clear shavings.
