Walked into an interview with my old work boots on and the hiring manager laughed at me

The laughter probably says more about them than about your boots. But old work boots to an interview is a bit of a choice, especially if they were covered in drywall dust or something. Next time maybe just wipe them down with a wet rag first.

A wet rag probably won't do much for caked-on drywall mud though.

You ever tried scraping it off with a stiff putty knife first? That's what I do when my boots get crusted over with joint compound. Then hit it with a damp cloth, @kim_west, and it'll come off way easier than just rubbing at it. A wire brush works too if the mud is really baked on there. Just don't soak the leather too much or you'll wreck the boots faster.
