Spent 2 years in a job I hated because of 'loyalty'

I was at this marketing firm in Austin for 3 years. Around the 1 year mark I knew it wasn't for me but I kept telling myself I had to stick it out. My boss even told me 'we're like family here' which made me feel guilty about leaving. Finally quit last month and got a new job paying $15k more. Now I realize I wasted 2 years of my career growth for no good reason. Has anyone else fallen for the 'loyalty' trap at a job?

...but I've got to say, your story is exactly what made me stop being a "loyalty first" person. I used to think sticking with a company through the rough patches was the right thing to do, you know, like some kind of badge of honor. Then I saw a friend of mine leave a job she hated for a better one, and she was so much happier (and richer, honestly) that it finally clicked for me. Now I see loyalty at work is mostly just a trap to keep you from getting what you're worth, and it's not your problem if the company can't keep you around. Good for you for getting out, seriously.

Yeah the whole "we're a family" thing is such a red flag. Companies just say that to make you feel bad about leaving so they can pay you less. I fell for it too at my last gig, stayed an extra year because I felt guilty. Then they laid off three people the month after I finally quit. Loyalty in business only goes one way and it's never from the company to you.
