Old school trick for getting past resume screeners actually worked for me

I spent months applying to jobs in Chicago with zero callbacks. A friend who works in HR told me to stop using the online portals and just find the hiring manager's email from the company website instead. I sent a short note to 12 people directly with my resume attached and got 4 interviews within 2 weeks. Has anyone else tried this approach and seen results?

Tried the same thing when I was job hunting in Chicago actually. Got way more replies than the online portals ever gave me.

So what kind of response rate did you actually see from the direct emails versus the online apps? I've been wondering if it's worth the extra time to track down actual people to email. Did you have a certain way you figured out who to contact at each company?

Wait, are we supposed to be using our brains for this stuff? I've been out here treating job applications like a slot machine, just pulling the lever on the same portal over and over. I gotta say, I'm kinda jealous - I tried that direct email thing once, but I accidentally sent my resume to the wrong person in accounting who then forwarded it to HR asking if I was lost. At least I got a response, I guess? Honestly, anything that gets you out of that black hole of automated rejections is a win in my book.
