My old boss said I should lie about my salary history and it actually worked but now I feel weird about it
A hiring manager at a small marketing firm last year told me to add $15k to my previous salary when they asked, so I did and got the job, but does anyone else think this kind of advice just makes the whole system worse for everyone?

That's a tough spot to be in, I get why you'd feel weird about it.

Last week my neighbor was in a similar situation and it ended up working out fine for her.

Sometimes it helps to just take a deep breath and focus on what you can control (which is usually less than you think). What worked for me in a similar spot was setting a small boundary right away, even if it felt awkward. I told my friend "I need to step back for a bit" and that gave me space to figure out my own feelings without pressure. It was scary at first but it actually made things less tense in the long run. People usually respect honesty more than we give them credit for, especially when you're clear and calm about it.
