Is the old 5-year plan still worth it or just a trap?
Last week my buddy in Denver got laid off after 8 years at the same firm, and he'd followed his 5-year plan to the letter. I've been running my own tree service for 12 years, and I never once sat down to map out a career path, just took jobs as they came. Now I'm wondering if all those goal-setting seminars my old boss made me attend in 2019 were actually useful or just corporate fluff. On one hand, having a plan gave my buddy clear raises and a promotion timeline, but on the other hand, that same plan left him blind when the industry shifted. Anyone else seen a detailed career roadmap either save or sink someone they know, or is it really about adapting on the fly?
