Had a project manager in Seattle tell me to just 'figure it out' on a Friday, then praise my work on Monday. What's the line between giving space and leaving someone stranded?

Got handed a "figure it out" task myself once. The line is drawn by what tools you're given. If they just drop a problem without any way to ask a follow up question, that's being stranded. For me, it worked because I knew I could send a quick email over the weekend if I hit a real wall. That safety net makes it space, not abandonment.
