Can we talk about taking a pay cut for a job you actually like?
Six months ago I was sitting in a diner in Cleveland with a guy named Rob who used to work at my company. He left a $72k desk job to go work at a small bike shop for $46k, and everyone at the office called him crazy. He told me he sleeps through the night now and hasn't touched his anxiety pills since spring, and I keep going back and forth on whether he's brave or just lucky. One side says money is money, and a $26k drop is a real hit when rent and groceries keep climbing. The other side says you can't put a price on not dreading Monday, and Rob looks ten times healthier than the guys who stayed. I've got an offer sitting in my inbox right now for less pay but way better hours, and I keep opening it and closing it. So where do you all land on this, is a pay cut for happiness a smart move or a trap you can't climb out of later?
