Torn between fixing the AC or just junking my 2005 Civic
I bought a 2005 Civic for $1500 three months ago and the AC compressor gave out last week. A shop in Phoenix quoted me $900 to fix it, which is more than half what I paid for the car. Do I drop the cash to keep it cool through summer, or should I just sell it to a scrapper and start over? Anyone been in this spot with an older car and a big repair bill?

more than half what I paid for the car" - that math doesn't really work like that though. You gotta think about it differently. The car itself is still worth something running right now, probably around $1500-$2000 if it's in decent shape besides the AC. So you're not comparing the repair to what you paid, you're comparing it to what you'd spend to replace the whole car. A $900 fix on a car that's otherwise solid is way cheaper than dropping $3000-$5000 on something newer that might have its own problems. Phoenix summers are brutal too, you could probably sell the car with working AC for more than it's worth now. Have you checked if maybe it's just a fuse or relay issue before committing to the compressor replacement?
