PSA: That mechanic who said you could patch a brake line with epoxy was wrong

My neighbor Jerry told me JB Weld would hold a rusted brake line on my 2002 Civic long enough to get to the shop, and I ended up losing all pressure halfway down a hill on I-35 in Austin has anyone else had a roadside fix backfire this bad?

Jerry meant well but JB Weld on a brake line is asking for trouble, especially with rust involved - that stuff can't handle the pressure spikes when you really stomp the pedal. I've seen people try that patch on a friend's F-150 and it held for maybe 10 miles before puking fluid all over a freeway offramp. Brake lines are one of those things where you just bite the bullet and replace them properly, or at least clamp it off temporarily with a proper line clamp if you're desperate.

Totally agree with you @ben_nguyen, JB Weld on brakes is like putting a bandaid on a dam. I tried that once on an old Civic I had, figured I'd save a few bucks. Lasted about as long as it took me to back out of the driveway, just a big puddle of brake fluid and me feeling real dumb. Brakes are one of those things where you gotta learn the hard way I guess, or just skip the lesson and do it right the first time.

The F-150 that puked fluid on the offramp - was that a rust hole that got bigger, or did the JB Weld just straight up blow off the fitting?
