PSA: I paid $180 to fix a cracked bumper on a 2009 Corolla, and the paint flaked off in 6 months

I banged up the rear bumper pulling out of a tight spot in Denver two winters ago, and the shop quoted me $180 to patch and repaint it. Six months later the paint was peeling in sheets, and a body guy later told me they just slapped filler over the crack without sealing it right. Has anyone had luck just leaving a cracked bumper alone, or did I get played by the first shop I called?
