My uncle's junkyard rule about rattles cost me $900 in Riverside

He always said if a car rattles, it's just character, don't touch it. I bought a 2004 Camry with a weird clunk in the rear, took his word for it. Drove it for 6 months until the whole axle gave out on the 91 freeway. Turns out it was a busted control arm bushing, a $140 fix if I'd caught it early. Anyone else ever trust a family member's cheap fix advice and end up paying way more later?

Man, "character" must be the most expensive word in the English language. My grandpa told me the same thing about a brake squeal on my old Ford, said it was just the pads "singing." Turned out the caliper was seizing up and it ate through a rotor and two tires before I figured it out. Cost me damn near a grand too. Your uncle probably meant well, but that man's philosophy should come with a warning label, not a warranty. At least your Camry made it six months, mine gave up on a Tuesday morning in the middle of a turn.
