I was dead set on swapping the engine in my 2000 Subaru Outback with 230k miles
I had the whole plan laid out, a junkyard motor lined up for $800, and even rented an engine hoist for the weekend. Then my buddy who flips cars for a living pointed out the frame rust was WAY worse than the rod knock, and suddenly I realized I was about to dump a grand into a car that couldn't pass inspection anymore. Has anyone else gotten tunnel vision on one fix and missed the REAL problem staring them in the face?

Oh man, that's brutal. You had the whole engine swap fantasy playing out in your head like a movie, only to realize the car's basically held together by rusty hopes and dreams. It's like me spending three hours figuring out why my check engine light was on, only to notice my gas cap was hanging by a thread the whole time. Tunnel vision is real, especially when you've already committed to the plan mentally and don't wanna back down. At least your buddy saved you from a very expensive lesson in denial, lol.

Hey @paigep20, isn't a loose gas cap usually the evap system though, not the CEL?
