Can we talk about the difference between fan campaigns for Firefly and The OA?
I've been in the trenches for both shows, and the way fans pushed for a Firefly movie versus how they tried to save The OA shows a huge difference. The Firefly campaign was focused, it had a clear goal: get a movie to finish the story. We raised money for ads, sent stuff to Fox, and it worked. The OA campaign felt all over the place, trying to get Netflix's attention with viral dances and flash mobs. It was creative, but it didn't have that single, sharp goal. After 3 months of trying to organize for The OA, I saw the energy just fade because there was no clear win in sight. Firefly's campaign gave people a finish line. Which canceled show do you think had the most effective fan strategy for a comeback?

It reminds me of how vague New Year's goals fail. A clear target like "run a 5k" works better than "get fit." The Firefly campaign was that 5k, a finish line people could actually see.

Yeah, that "finish line people could actually see" is exactly it. It gave everyone a shared picture of success, not just a fuzzy idea. Honestly, most big projects fail because the goal feels too far away or unclear. Having that one clear thing to aim for, like a specific show getting made, turns supporters into a real team. It stops being just a hope and starts feeling like a plan you can actually help win.

Did you read that article about the Firefly campaign in Wired a few years back? They broke down how the Browncoats basically ran it like a political campaign, with clear milestones and a concrete ask for a movie. The OA fans tried really hard, but their goal was more like 'get Netflix to notice us' than 'greenlight this specific project.' That's a huge difference. Firefly had a singular enemy in Fox and a simple message: give us closure. The OA was fighting a streaming giant's algorithm, which is a lot harder to pin down. I think having a clear villain and a simple ask makes all the difference in the world for keeping momentum.
