Update: my cousin in Toledo got canceled by our whole family over a Facebook post, and 8 months later I am not sure we did the right thing
So my cousin posted something dumb on Facebook about a year ago, nothing hateful, just a bad joke about a local teacher that got screenshotted and passed around. Within like 3 days, my aunt told everyone at Easter not to invite him to anything, and 14 people in the family group chat just went silent on him. I unfollowed him too because I did not want the drama, I will admit that. Last weekend I saw him at a graduation party in Toledo and he looked rough, said he lost two friends and his side gig teaching guitar because parents saw the post. Here is the weird part: the teacher he joked about showed up at the same party and they talked for like 20 minutes and seemed fine with each other. So now I am sitting here wondering if we punished him way harder than the actual person he hurt. Has anyone else watched their own family do a cancel thing and later felt like it went too far?
