Watching a local band get torn apart online for a 10-year-old tweet changed how I see 'accountability'
It was at a small show in Austin last month, and the lead singer had to address a joke he'd made on X back in 2014 before they could even play. The crowd was mostly just confused. The whole thing felt less like justice and more like a weird, performative ritual that ruined the night. Has anyone else seen a call-out actually derail a real event in person?

Yeah that "performative ritual" feeling is the worst, just kills the vibe for everyone.

Actually I think that feeling can really bring a group together sometimes.

Wow I gotta push back on this one. Seeing the singer address it head on before the show actually sounds like it could have cleared the air and let everyone move on. I was at a similar thing last year where a band just pretended nothing happened and the whole night felt tense like people were waiting for someone to bring it up. More often than not the silence and avoidance is what really kills the mood, not the person taking responsibility. Are you sure it wasn't just awkward because nobody knew how to react, not because the accountability itself was wrong?
