Took me 6 months to realize my cancel call was way off base

I called out a small YouTuber last October for something she supposedly said in a live stream. I saw a clip that got passed around and jumped on the bandwagon without watching the full 2 hour video. It took me until last week to finally sit through the whole thing and realize the clip was edited to change her meaning completely. I spent all that time feeling righteous and it turns out I was the one in the wrong. Has anyone else made a snap judgment on a cancel call and later found out they were missing key context?

Man that hits close to home. I had a similar thing happen with a musician I called out for lip syncing. I saw a short clip of him barely moving his lips during a concert and went in on him online. Took me months to watch the full concert and realize the clip was from a moment where the sound guy literally messed up the audio feed, not him faking it. What finally worked for me was making a rule for myself. If I see something that makes me angry, I have to watch the whole source before I say anything. Also, I started looking up the person's normal content first to see if the clip matches how they usually act. It is tough because these clips are designed to trigger a reaction but taking that extra hour to check the full context saved me from being wrong again. I still feel bad about that musician though, he never even saw my apology.

That self rule is actually genius. It's wild how fast those clips are designed to make us react before the brain even has a chance to catch up lol.
