The day a 3 minute clip got a local baker cancelled for good
I was sitting at a coffee shop on Main Street in my town last June scrolling through Facebook when I saw a video of this baker, Sarah, who ran a popular bakery for like 8 years. Someone filmed her arguing with a customer over a gluten free cake order that went wrong, and the customer posted it with a caption saying she was rude and ableist. Within 48 hours, her shop had 200 one star reviews online and a protest outside her door. I actually knew Sarah a little, so I stopped by and she told me the customer had changed the order 3 times and then yelled at her when she couldn't do it last minute. By the time the truth came out a week later, the damage was done. Her sales dropped by 60% and she had to close down 2 months after. Has anyone else seen a small business get wrecked by one out of context clip like that?

Doesn't it seem like we're only getting one side of the story here? The baker might have been right about the order changes, but a 3 minute clip of her arguing with a customer doesn't just come out of nowhere. If she handled it professionally from the start, there likely wouldn't have been a video worth posting in the first place.

Yo but here's the thing nobody's really talking about - what if the customer was the one making the changes every single time and the baker just had enough? Like I've dealt with people who think they can just tweak an order nonstop and then act surprised when you finally push back. You can't keep changing your mind on a custom cake and expect zero friction. A 3 minute clip could easily be the last straw after a whole history of the customer being a pain in the ass. The baker might've handled it fine for the first 47 changes before finally snapping at change 48.

lol "doesn't just come out of nowhere" - exactly. I had a neighbor who filmed every single interaction with his landlord for months before there was actually a problem. He was just waiting for the perfect moment to post something. Some people walk around with their phones ready to catch you slipping. The baker might have been totally fine with the first 50 orders but that one bad day got recorded. Nobody posts the boring videos where both people are polite and everything goes smoothly.
