I used to think calling someone out online was always the right move

About two years ago, I saw a tweet from a small artist I liked that seemed really off color. I was one of the first to quote tweet it with a 'wow, this is bad' comment. The pile-on was immediate and huge. A week later, someone found the original, badly cropped screenshot from a private group where the full context showed she was actually quoting a bully to call them out. The damage was done though, her commissions dried up for months. That was my specific moment. I realized my quick 'call-out' was just adding to a mob without knowing the full story. It felt like doing the right thing, but it was just reckless. Has anyone else had a moment where a call-out you supported turned out to be totally wrong?

Honestly victorb17, the drafts folder is where my best takes go to die.
