I posted nice comments on 30 cancellation threads for a week and it backfired in a way I did not expect
So I had this dumb idea last month where I would go on every call-out thread I could find and leave a calm, nice comment like "maybe we should hear both sides" just to see what would happen. I did it on 30 threads over 7 days, and on 22 of them I got called a secret fan, a bot, or worse. One person dug through my old posts from 2019 and screenshotted a joke I made about a band, and suddenly I was the one getting called out in a separate thread with like 400 replies. What I learned is that the middle ground gets hit from both sides, and staying quiet is honestly safer. Has anyone here ever tried to defend someone getting piled on and actually changed a single mind?
Tried the same thing on a few threads and yeah, it goes bad fast. But I don't think it's totally pointless, because the lurkers reading along sometimes shift even if the loud people don't. You just never see it happen, which is why it feels like a waste.
