Heard a guy at the gym say 'you can apologize all you want, the clip still plays' and it stuck with me
Last Thursday I was between clients at the gym here in Boise and two guys on the bench press were talking about some podcast host who got dropped by his sponsors over a joke from 2019. One of them, older guy, maybe 55, said the line about the clip still playing and how an apology does not stop the video from coming up in someone's feed for the rest of your life. I did not jump in because I was working, but I chewed on it for the rest of my shift. Here is what I pulled out of it: when people call for a cancellation, they are almost never reacting to the person, they are reacting to a 20 second clip. The clip travels, the context does not, and the apology has to fight a fight it can never win because the clip is shorter and moveable. So my tip for these debates is to find the clip first, the actual source, before you pick a side. Look at how long it is, who cut it, and what got left on the floor. Nine times out of ten the fight is really about the edit, not the person. Has anyone here actually changed their mind on a cancellation after tracking down the full clip instead of the short one?
