Vent: My old sleeping bag was a total joke after one cold night in the Adirondacks

I used a 20 year old synthetic bag from a big box store on a trip last October, and I was freezing even though it was only 40 degrees out. I finally swapped it for a modern 20 degree down bag from a real brand, and the difference is insane. It packs down to half the size and actually keeps me warm. Has anyone else had a gear piece that was just embarrassingly bad once you finally replaced it?

Remember my first "waterproof" jacket from a discount store. It soaked through in a light drizzle and weighed a ton. Upgraded to a basic Gore-Tex shell and felt like an idiot for ever trusting that old thing.

Oh man, my first backpacking stove. It was this giant, clunky white gas thing I bought for like twenty bucks. Took ten minutes to prime, sounded like a jet engine, and once it melted a hole right through a cheap plastic table. Upgrading to a simple canister stove felt like going from a horse and buggy to a spaceship.

Those old stoves had a charm the new ones just can't match.
