Unpopular opinion: My bulky canvas tent is actually perfect for car camping
Everyone seems to love those tiny, quick-setup tents these days, but I think they miss the point for car trips. My heavy canvas tent takes longer to pitch (I know, it's a hassle), but it feels like a real room out there. Last summer, during a sudden storm, my buddy's pop-up tent leaked while mine stayed dry and quiet inside. Yeah, it weighs a ton and packs huge, but for driving to a site and staying put, the space and sturdiness are worth it. People act like lighter is always better, but comfort on rainy days beats speed any time. I'll keep using my old tent because it turns a campsite into a cozy spot, not just a sleep pod.

But isn't the main hassle the setup time itself? Picture getting to camp late in a drizzle or after dark. Your buddy's pop-up is done in two minutes while you're still wrestling poles. That extra space is nice until you need to find a place to store the giant bag in a garage the rest of the year. For a couple of rainy hours, does it really beat all the other days of easy trips?
