TIL a random hiker pointed out my tent was pitched wrong for wind

I set up my tent facing the same way as always near Mt. Hood last weekend, and a guy walking by said my rear panel was catching gusts like a sail. He showed me to turn the narrow end into the wind, and I stayed bone dry while my buddy's tent flapped all night. Has anyone else had a stranger's offhand comment fix a camping habit you never questioned?

Oh man that reminds me of when someone at a campground told me I was tying my food bag wrong for bears. I'd been doing it the same way for years and never had issues but he showed me this sticky little knot trick. Now I can't even remember my old way. Funny how one random person can just rewrite your whole camping brain.

Totally get it, a random tip like that can totally change your whole approach. Makes you wonder what other little things we're just doing wrong without knowing.
